GONZALES — A free four-day youth soccer camp took place last week at Gonzales High School’s Dick Force Stadium on the new turf fields.

The July 29-Aug. 1 event was a collaboration between the Gonzales High School soccer program and the Salinas Police Athletic League.

Gonzales varsity boys’ soccer head coach Miguel Viduari was pleased with the turnout for the youth soccer camp.

“It was a great turnout from the first day,” Viduari said. “We had 150 kids show up to start the camp. Everything went really well, and I had numerous volunteers helping out, including the boys’ and girls’ soccer players from Gonzales High.”

Also helping Vidauri was his varsity assistant coach Danny Pulido, along with Javier Escobar, Eduardo Escobar and Jesus Pulido.

During the camp, the young campers were organized by ages 5-7 and 8-13 and were taught basic soccer drills, had scrimmages, along with group games like duck-duck goose and sharks and minnows.

“I’d like to thank all my sponsors, all the volunteers who put this together,” Viduari said. “I’d also like to thank Salinas Valley Futbol Central in Salinas for donating soccer balls, bags, shin guards and jerseys. It was exciting to have the camp on our new turf field, as parents were already asking when we would have another one. With a field this big, we were able to fit the kids in their groups and get work in.”

Additional sponsors for the camp included Mac Builder Construction, 101 Exterminators and Savor the Local.
