SALINAS — On Oct. 1 at about 7:34 p.m., a collision involving four vehicles occurred on southbound Highway 101, north of Spence Road, killing a Gonzales man and injuring four others.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 44-year-old Luciano Medina of Salinas was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado the wrong way northbound in the southbound No. 1 lane of Highway 101 and collided head on with a 2004 Nissan Frontier driven by Raymundo Navarro, 68, of Gonzales.

Navarro suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The collision also impacted a 2000 Honda Odyssey, which was struck on the right side, and a 2000 BMW that was hit at the front end. The driver of the Odyssey, 49-year-old Jose Torres, and his passenger, 44-year-old Blanca Camarillo, both of Soledad, suffered minor injuries.

The BMW driver, 21-year-old Erick Corona of Gonzales, also suffered minor injuries.

Medina suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Natividad Medical Center. He was arrested at the scene for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and remains in police custody at the hospital.

The collision is still under investigation, police said.
