SOUTH COUNTY — Local wrestling teams have been keeping busy by attending invitational tournaments and beyond. The Gonzales High School wrestling team competed at Saturday’s Overfelt Classic in San Jose and placed 17th out of 48 teams. Soledad High traveled to Santa Maria to compete at the Righetti JV Invitational.

In San Jose Gregorio Alfaro of Gonzales wrestled in the 128 pound weight class and finished with a 4-1 record to earn the consolation championship. Robert Ochoa wrestled in the 197 pound weight class and finished with a 4-1 record. Ochoa was unable to compete in the battle for third place as he had an injury and defaulted the match. Ochoa did not suffer a serious injury. Gonzales took a total of seven wrestlers to Overfelt.

At Santa Maria four Soledad wrestlers placed. Raymond Cantu took first in the 106 pound weight class; Sebastian Lopez was fourth at 113; Kevin Oropeza placed third at 195; and Nick Morales placed second at 132 pounds.

Tonight at Carmel High School Gonzales and Soledad High will compete in a Mission Trail Athletic League Quad Meet against Pacific Grove and the host Carmel Padres. In round one Pacific Grove will wrestle Gonzales and Carmel will wrestle Soledad. In round two Pacific Grove will wrestle Soledad and Carmel wrestles Gonzales. In the final round Pacific Grove will face off with Carmel, and Gonzales wrestles Soledad.
