SALINAS VALLEY — On Saturday, the King City and Gonzales wrestling teams traveled north to compete at the Peninsula Invitational in Half Moon Bay and at Overfelt High School in San Jose.

At Half Moon Bay, King City had three wrestlers make the podium in their respective weight classes. Angel Becerra placed fourth at 106 pounds; Jden Hernandez placed fourth at 215 pounds; and Julian Rodriguez was the consolation champion at 175 pounds.

The highlight of the day came from Rodriguez, who pinned his opponent from Santa Cruz while down by 14 points.

King City’s Armando Villasenor (190), David Zavala (144), Nate Vargas (175) and Deandre Esparza all picked up a pair of victories.

Gonzales High had their girls wrestle at the 16th Annual Lady Royal Tournament at Overfelt High School with more than 40 teams participating.

Emily Ramirez (115) and Juliet Amador (140) represented Gonzales, with Amador coming away with a fifth-place medal.

At the Ed Ferrell Classic at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz on Saturday, Gonzales wrestlers Jose Lomeli and Jesus Rodriguez placed first and Andrew Tejeda took third. Also wrestling for the Spartans were Nazon Jimenez and Jesus De Lucas Vargas.
