Gonzales High graduate and champion wrestler Rudy Guevara will talk about his career this Saturday.
GONZALES — Gonzales High graduate Rudy Guevara will be the guest speaker Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Roger Fernando Gym.
Guevara, a 1973 Gonzales graduate, has been invited to speak to Gonzales student-athletes, parents and alumni about his career in wrestling as a competitor and as a coach. The event is hosted by the Gonzales High School football program and the Shield Bearers Football Booster Club.
“It is a pleasure to have Rudy Guevara come to speak here in Gonzales,” said Gonzales head football coach Arthur Berlanga. “He was an athlete here at Gonzales when the Spartans were very successful in football and wrestling and has competed and coached at the highest levels. As a Spartan, he was a member of the wrestling, football and baseball teams.”
Guevara placed third in the first California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships at 112 pounds and was three-time champion in the Pacific Coast Association as a member of the San Jose State wrestling team. Guevara had a record 106 victories and 28 losses as a member of the San Jose Spartan team.
Guevara served as an assistant coach for three years at San Jose State after graduating and has served as a coach for U.S. teams that have competed in Poland and Russia. Guevara coached in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, four Olympic festivals and tours to Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan and Germany.
The Gonzales football program and the Shield Bearers will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks at the end of the event.
