SALINAS VALLEY — Gonzales High School’s wrestling team competed in Watsonville and San Jose last week.

In Watsonville last Thursday, Spartan grapplers Jesus De Lucas, Jose Lomeli, Andrew Tejeda, Gabriel Prieto and Cristian Zazueta won by fall.

On Saturday, Gonzales competed in the Lynbrook 2nd Man Challenge at Lynbrook High School in San Jose. Lomeli at 150 pounds and Zazueta at heavyweight placed third in the event.

Strong showings for the Spartans included De Lucas (120 pounds); Nazon Jimenez (144 pounds); Ariel Macias (150 pounds); and Andrew Tejeda (215 pounds).

Gonzales placed 15th out of 40 teams that participated in the meet.

The Spartan boys and girls will participate in the Cypress Divisional Championship hosted by St. Francis High School on Thursday.

Then, on Thursday night, the King City High School wrestling team will travel to Soledad High for a match that will determine the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division title.

Last week the Mustang boys extended their unbeaten league wins mark to five after a 54-28 victory over Monte Vista Christian. David Zavala, Noel Lara, Julian Rodriguez, Armando Villasenor and Nate Vargas all picked up a win by pin.

The King City varsity girls lost a head-to-head dual against Monterey last week. Sophia Garcia and Makayla Montoya were the only Mustangs who picked up a victory. Both Garcia and Montoya remain undefeated in league competition with the Gabilan Division.

Last Saturday, the Mustang JV boys also competed in the Lynbrook 2nd Man Challenge. Ethan “Cowboy” Sanchez earned a fifth-place medal after finishing the day with four wins and two losses. Other King City JV standouts included Angel De La Cruz and Ivan Almanza, who picked up a pair of victories.
