SALINAS VALLEY — Volleyball season is coming to an end, and for three of the four South Monterey County teams, their season will be continuing into the postseason.
Greenfield Bruins have won their first volleyball title since 2008, according to Greenfield Head Coach Adrian Trujillo.
After the canceled game with York, the Lady Bruins had clinched the Pacific Coast Arroyo Division with four games still to be played.
The only thing left for the Bruins was to go undefeated in the league, but after winning 12 straight matches, they fell from the unbeaten and lost to Kirby in 3-to-1 sets.
With only one game remaining in the league against Pacific Point Christian School, the Lady Bruins will prepare to host their first playoff game.
Some of the top Lady Bruins performers have been Linda Ornelas, who leads the team in assists with 303; Lupita Nunez, who leads in kills with 269 and blocks with 31; and Ariana Villagomez, who leads in digs with 264.
After dropping two straight games to Santa Catalina and Notre Dame, the King City Mustangs have rattled off three consecutive victories. With those wins, the Lady Mustangs have improved their record to 7-4.
King City will finish up on the road at Soledad for their final game of the season. If the Lady Mustangs can take care of business against the Aztecs, there is an excellent chance that they will make the playoffs.
The Lady Mustangs’ top performers this season are Amit Hearne, who leads the team in assists with 34; Lisa Villanueva, who leads in kills with 84; and Liz Hernandez, who leads in digs with 137 and aces with 21.
Gonzales Spartans have already clinched no worse than a share of the Pacific Coast San Lucia Division and will have a chance to win the title outright when they face Trinity Christian at home for their season finale on Monday night, after press deadlines.
The Lady Spartans dropped their first game in the league when they lost to the second-place team, Stevenson Pirates, in straight sets. With the loss, the Spartans opened up a small door for the Pirates to capture at least a share of the league title.
All the Spartans have to do is best Trinity Christian at home, then they will add a banner to the already decorated gym.
The top performers for the Lady Spartans are Bryanna Perez, who leads in assists with 204; Julissa Aldaco, who leads in kills with 115, blocks with 30 and aces with 26; and Aneesa Sandoval leads in digs with 21.
For Soledad, the season couldn’t end fast enough. The Lady Aztecs are in jeopardy of going winless in league play. The last time the Aztecs won a match was on Sept. 16 against Rancho San Juan.
