MONTEREY COUNTY ā With tax season underway, United Way Monterey County (UWMC) is making it easier for local residents to file their taxes accurately and affordably.
Through MyFreeTaxes, a free and secure online filing tool, individuals can prepare and submit their federal and California state tax returns at no cost. UWMC is also offering additional support through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for those who prefer personalized, in-person help.

MyFreeTaxes is a user-friendly, IRS-backed platform that allows eligible taxpayers to file their federal and California state returns from the comfort of home. The program offers step-by-step guidance and built-in error checking to help maximize refunds, ensuring filers claim all eligible credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).
For those who prefer in-person assistance, UWMCās VITA program provides free tax preparation services at multiple locations throughout Monterey County. Trained, IRS-certified volunteers help eligible taxpayers complete their returns accurately, and bilingual assistance is available at select sites.
Last year, United Way Monterey County helped 1,621 residents claim over $2 million in tax refunds and credits, putting money back into the hands of hardworking families and individuals.
