KING CITY — This Saturday the 79th King City Invitational will take place at King City High School’s War Memorial Stadium.
The meet will be hosted by the King City High track and field team and sponsored by the King City Lions Club and King City Young Farmers.
“We are currently at 31 schools that will attend the meet,” said King City Mustangs track and field coach Ismael Rocha. “We will honor Coach Jim Stireman this year and have added a Jim Stireman Team Sportsmanship that will be awarded by David and Russ Stireman. This meet could be the biggest and most competitive in King City in the last decade or two.”
Events will be contested in the varsity and frosh-soph boys and girls divisions.
For varsity, the top 36 marks will be accepted in the 100- and 200-meter races and the top 27 marks in all other varsity events. For frosh-soph, the top 27 marks will be accepted in the 100- and 200-meter races and the top 18 in all other frosh-soph events.
Custom medals will be awarded for placing first through fifth in each event. The top two teams in each division will earn trophies, and there will be four high point awards. To honor Coach Stireman, a team award in his name will be presented at the end of the meet to one team.
The field events will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the running events, beginning with the hurdles at 10 a.m.
All four South Monterey County high schools — Gonzales, Greenfield, King City and Soledad — are set to compete, along with teams from Arroyo Grande, Carmel, Everett Alvarez, Hollister, Lompoc, North Salinas, Palma, Paso Robles, Salinas, Santa Cruz, Seaside, Templeton, Watsonville and more.
MUSTANG FUNDRAISER
The King City High track and field team is conducting an online Snap Fundraiser to earn funds to help purchase essential items, including new pole vault poles and throwing implements, and to update training equipment.
