SOLEDAD — The City of Soledad has been selected as one of only 10 communities nationwide to participate in the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Workforce Development Community of Practice (CoP), a prestigious federally funded initiative aimed at preparing rural youth for successful futures.
As part of this honor, the Soledad Parks and Recreation Department will host a unique event titled “The Real World Survival Guide (The Things They Don’t Teach You in School)” on Saturday, April 12, at the Soledad Community Center.
The event is open to youth ages 16-23 and will provide interactive, hands-on training in vital life and workforce skills.
“This represents a tremendous opportunity for local youth to gain essential life and workforce skills — all at no cost to them,” the City of Soledad stated in its announcement.
The day will kick off with Life Skills and Workforce Development Sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., featuring workshops on resume building, financial literacy, cooking on a budget and auto maintenance. These sessions are designed to give youth the practical tools they need to navigate adulthood and thrive in their careers.
Following the workshops, a Job and Career Fair from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., in partnership with Monterey County Works, will connect attendees with local employers and industry professionals across sectors — including public service — who will share job opportunities and career pathways.
Soledad Parks and Recreation Director Jessica Potts was selected as one of only 10 professionals in the country to participate in the NRPA Workforce Development CoP, which is supported by the U.S. Department of Labor. The program provides participating cities with funding, expert guidance and national-level resources to enhance career readiness for young people.
“Soledad’s selection for this initiative is a significant achievement,” city officials noted. “It places the city among a select group of communities nationwide, leading the charge in workforce development for rural youth.”
The event will be held at the Soledad Community Center, located at 560 Walker Drive, in Soledad.
