SOLEDAD — City of Soledad has announced the launch of its Park Attendant Pilot Program, a new initiative that provides youth employment opportunities while enhancing the safety, cleanliness and hospitality of Orchard Lane Park during the busy summer season.

The program, which will run on weekends from May 24 through Sept. 1, is made possible through a $20,000 Youth Workforce Development grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

This grant, awarded as part of a nationwide initiative to support workforce development through parks and out-of-school time programs, has enabled the City to hire and train local youth to serve as park attendants.

“This pilot program is more than just park coverage, it’s a hands-on workforce readiness opportunity that teaches responsibility, customer service and real-world problem-solving,” said Jessica Potts, Soledad Parks and Recreation director. “At the same time, it ensures that Orchard Lane Park is clean, welcoming and better monitored for our families and visitors.”

Two attendants will be on-site each Saturday and Sunday to set up recreational games, monitor the splash pad, assist guests and report maintenance or safety issues. The staff have been trained in professional conduct, incident response and basic park maintenance.

The City’s participation in the NRPA Workforce Development Community of Practice, a national learning cohort focused on increasing access to career pathways for youth in rural communities, provided additional support and training.

This effort builds on the City Council’s commitment to investing in youth services, including the Soledad Youth Council and ongoing career readiness workshops. The pilot program will be evaluated at the end of the summer for potential continuation or expansion.
