SALINAS VALLEY — There will be some serious soccer being played in the next two weeks as South Monterey County high schools battle for the divisional titles and Central Coast Section playoffs spots.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The Gonzales High girls’ soccer team is one game behind Robert Louis Stevenson at 5-0-2, with a big showdown taking place this Thursday at Pebble Beach with RLS (6-0-2).
Last week the Spartans won two games by shutout, claiming a 3-0 win over Marina and an 8-1 victory against Ceiba College Prep.
At Marina, Alessandra Tejeda scored two goals and Katherine Toledo scored a solo goal against the Mariners. Alitzel Mauro and Valerie Oliva were credited with assists.
On Friday, the Spartans downed Ceiba College Prep by an 8-1 score. Oliva finished the game with four goals and had two assists. Adding goals were Toledo with two, while Toledo and Mauro had one assist apiece.
Gonzales head coach Jose Tejeda is excited about how well his girls are playing in every Santa Lucia Division contest.
“Feeling anxious and excited,” Tejeda said. “I believe the girls will play their hardest to win every game left. Definitely, the girls that were here last year are motivating the youngsters. They know this can be our year.”
At Soledad, the Lady Aztecs are 6-1 in the Mission Division and 12-2-1 overall as they succeeded on the road and at home.
Soledad shut out the host Seaside Spartans 3-0 last Monday, and Giselle Zepeda, Josselyn Coria and Maria Sanchez scored solo goals.
Last Friday, Zepeda scored a goal at the 22-minute mark of the first half and the Aztec defense did the rest in Soledad’s 1-0 win at home against Pacific Collegiate.
“We were finally able to score a pair of goals in the first half and not have to worry and wait until the last minute to try to score,” said Soledad head coach Victor Garcia. “To start the second round of league, we hosted Pacific Collegiate and took the lead early in the first half, but after that they (Pacific Collegiate) began to play better and gave us some trouble. Standouts for both games were Belen Diaz, Giselle Zepeda, Mariana Leon and Jennifer Torcoso.”
Soledad played in Watsonville yesterday against Monte Vista Christian and will host the Pajaro Valley Grizzles tomorrow night.
Greenfield Lady Bruins went .500 for the week, beating the Anzar Hawks by an 8-1 score and completing the week with a 2-1 lost to Robert Louis Stevenson.
Andrea Marquez De Los Santos scored four goals and had one assist in the Hawks game. Aaliyah Ortiz added a pair of goals, and Destiny Hernandez and Aundrea Sanchez each scored goals.
Greenfield has a 4-2-1 league record in the Santa Lucia Division and is 6-5-2 overall.
King City Lady Mustangs did not have any games last week but will be back in action this week. King City is 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the Cypress Division.
In games this week: Gonzales hosted Anzar on Monday at Rabobank and plays Thursday at RLS; Greenfield played at Marina Tuesday and will host Trinity Christian on Thursday; King City played at Pacific Grove on Monday, hosted the North Monterey County Condors on Wednesday and will play at York on Friday; and Soledad played at Monte Vista Christian on Tuesday and will host Pajaro Valley on Thursday.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The King City boys are in first place in the Mission Division over Pajaro Valley by half a game after a 2-2 tie last Friday against the Palma Chieftains.
Ben Alcantara and Sebastian Sanchez scored the Mustang goals, and Isidro Hernandez finished with two assists.
King City is 4-1-2 in the league and 6-6-2 overall.
The Soledad boys struggled last week in Mission play, falling 2-1 against the Salinas Cowboys at home, and were beaten by a 4-1 tally at Monterey. Diego Guillen scored for Soledad against the Monterey Toreadores.
The Aztecs are 1-5-1 in the division and 3-5-2 overall.
Greenfield is 3-3-1 in the Gabilan Division and 6-6-2 overall, as they lost 2-1 to the Watsonville Wildcatz and beat the Alisal Trojans by a 2-1 score.
Cristian Flores scored the goal against Watsonville, and Jesus Arroyo and Fabian Juarez scored against the Trojans. Gio Hernandez and Larry Picazo earned assists.
Gonzales had one game scheduled for last week and won by forfeit to Pacific Collegiate. The Spartans are in third place in the Cypress (3-2-2) and are 8-5-2 overall.
In boys’ soccer games this week: Soledad played Tuesday at home with Palma, plays Thursday at Pajaro Valley and will host King City on Saturday; the Mustangs played at Rancho San Juan on Tuesday and will host Salinas on Thursday; Gonzales played at Ceiba College Prep on Tuesday, hosted Carmel on Wednesday at Rabobank and will travel to Robert Louis Stevenson on Friday; and Greenfield played at Everett Alvarez on Monday, played at Hollister on Tuesday and will host North Salinas on Thursday night.
