SPELLING BEE

MONTEREY COUNTY — Brayden Gallardo of San Benancio Middle School was awarded top placement at the Monterey County Spelling Bee, which was held virtually this year. Rounding out the top nine placements were other county schools, but no students from South Monterey County. Sophia Soto of San Lucas Elementary School was the only district champion to compete at the county level from a South Monterey County school. A total of 24 students competed in the county championship.


SENIOR TRANSPORTATION

MONTEREY COUNTY — Transportation is being provided to seniors by iTN Monterey County. Those age 65 or older with an appointment for a Covid-19 vaccine can qualify for free transportation by calling 831-233-3447. Requests must be made more than 24 hours in advance, and rides are based on driver availability.


VACCINE UPDATE

CENTRAL COAST — More than 1,400 veterans age 55 or older have received their first dose of Moderna Covid-19 vaccines at the MG Gourley VA Clinic in Marina. The Pfizer vaccine has been available to veterans at the VA Palo Alto clinic. The first doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are expected within the next week. Military and Veterans Affairs Office reminded these clinics are not walk-in. Those veteran who are not connected to the VA or desire to discuss additional benefits, can contact mvao.org or 831-647-7613.
