INSPIRED MARKET

KING CITY — A ribbon-cutting celebration for La Cocina (The Kitchen) becoming a Blue Zones Project Inspired Market is set for Friday, Aug. 2, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 815 Broadway St., in King City. As a BZP Inspired Market, nearly all the participating vendors will feature a healthy, plant-based dish. This new chapter is inspired by the mission and values of Blue Zones Project Monterey County, which aims to foster a healthier environment for the community. The free family-friendly event includes giveaways, music, food and performances from Folklórico.


FARMWORKER PANEL

SALINAS — Experts in grassroots activism, law and farm work will discuss what changes are needed — in policy, enforcement, community and in the health and economic systems — to improve current farm jobs and the future prospects of those who work them. Presented by Zócalo Public Square and The Irvine Foundation, agriculture worker and student José Anzaldo, agricultural consultant James Nakahara, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas executive director and co-founder Mily Treviño-Sauceda and retired farmworker attorney Juan Uranga visit Zócalo in “America’s salad bowl” to discuss what it would take to make life in California sustainable for the people whose work helps sustain us all. The program will be moderated by Rebecca Plevin, reporter at The Los Angeles Times. The panel discussion will be held at Sherwood Elementary School, 110 S. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

SALINAS VALLEY — National Night Out will take place Tuesday, Aug. 6, with free celebrations in all four South Monterey County cities. King City will kick off the annual community-policing event at 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the King City Fire Department, 422 Bassett St. Soledad will host its event from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Soledad Community Center, 560 Walker Drive. Greenfield’s celebration will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at Greenfield Village at the Gazebo. Lastly, Gonzales has set its event for 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gonzales Police Department, 109 Fourth St. Each gathering will offer free food, games, music, safety education and more, as families come together with local police departments to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
