ENGLISH COURSE

KING CITY — Monterey County Free Libraries is offering an eight-week long English as a Second Language (ESL) course at the King City branch for adult learners. This is a “basics” English class with short readings, dictation, conversation and similar activities. The course will run from Thursday, Jan. 11, to Thursday, Feb. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the King City Library, 402 Broadway St. Registration is not required, and participants do not need to attend each class. SENIOR SOCIAL

GREENFIELD — City of Greenfield will present the Senior Social on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greenfield Memorial Hall, 615 El Camino Real. The event is free for seniors age 60-plus, and features music, dancing and a complimentary meal prepared by the Lions Club and American Legion. Registration is required by Friday, Jan. 12, by calling 831-277-0514.


STUDENT LEADERS

MONTEREY — Once again Bank of America has opened the application process to select two high school (junior/senior) students to be the 2024 Student Leaders in Monterey. Bank of America annually connects more than 300 community-minded high school juniors and seniors from over 100 communities to employment, skills development and service through the Student Leaders program. Through paid internships with local nonprofits and participation in a national leadership summit, they gain practical work and life experience. The deadline to apply is Jan. 17, and more information can be found at this link. Students who have submitted applications will be notified of their application status in spring 2024.


BONUS BRIEF: LIBRARY CLOSURE

MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County Free Libraries will be celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. this month. All MCFL branches will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 13, in recognition of this national holiday. Seaside Branch and Administrative Offices will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, for the holiday. Downloadable books and magazines and online resources are available 24/7.
