SOLEDAD — Repair and construction work to replace a culvert underneath River Road damaged during the 2021 winter storms in the Soledad area will begin June 1.

Construction and message signs will be placed along River Road leading up to Fairview Road in anticipation of construction activities. The project is expected to take about five months to complete.

While the majority of the work will be done outside of the roadway, delays and temporary traffic control are expected during the day, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A community meeting was held for residents and businesses affected by this work on May 26 at Puma Road Winery in Soledad.

Construction activities will include excavation, grading, pipe installation, rip-rap installation, paving, curb installation, signing and striping. Certain phases of the work will require temporary closure of River Road to install the culvert under the existing roadway.

“Advance notification to the community will be provided prior to any planned road closures,” according to Monterey County Public Works in a news release.

The estimated construction cost for the River Road Emergency Repair project is $3 million, funded by the Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief program with a local match using Measure X funds.

Whitaker Construction Group Inc., from Paso Robles, was awarded the construction contract.
