GREENFIELD — Greenfield Police Department has made multiple arrests in connection with a shooting that took place near Village Green Park last month.

With assistance from the Seaside Police Department, 30-year-old Gregorio Castaneda of Greenfield was recently taken into custody for his involvement in the June 13 shooting in the area of St. Charles Place and Huerta Avenue in Greenfield. That arrest resulted in a residential search warrant in Seaside, where a firearm was recovered.

Local patrol officers and investigators diligently continued working on the case, and with the help from the Soledad Police Department and the Monterey County Probation Department, they also arrested 30-year-old Steven Zavala of King City for his involvement in the same shooting.

On the evening of June 13, both men shot at each other near a busy shopping center and park, police said. The shooting was captured by multiple security cameras and witnessed by several community members, who came forward and talked to police.

Greenfield officers then obtained arrest warrants for Castaneda and Zavala.

In addition, a residential warrant was served at the home of 25-year-old Luis Lopez in the 100 block of Huerta Avenue. After the shooting, Zavala hid at a Lopez’s apartment, police said.

During the search, police said officers discovered “evidence of drug sales” and arrested Lopez.

All three suspects have been booked into the Monterey County Jail.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Soledad, Seaside and Monterey County Probation departments for their assistance in these matters,” said Greenfield Police in a news release on June 26. “We truly appreciate the teamwork and collaboration. Most importantly, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the amazing community members who have come forward with information to help keep Greenfield safe. Your support and vigilance are essential in our mission to protect and serve our community.”
