SALINAS VALLEY — Over the past week, spine-chilling activities to celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) took place throughout the Salinas Valley.

Hundreds of trick-or-treaters stopped by the third annual Front Street’s Spook Fest on Monday, presented by the group Front Street in collaboration with the City of Soledad and Soledad Police Department.

The family-friendly event took place on Front Street and featured games, contests, music, Trunk-or-Treat and a car parade.

City of Gonzales staff at City Hall also got into the holiday spirit, with many dressing up as “Minions” characters on Monday.

Prior to Halloween, Greenfield Community Science Workshop brought its Science Mobile to Cesar Chavez Elementary School for a Trunk-or-Treat event on Oct. 28, providing pumpkins and candy to the community.

The Workshop also hosted a Halloween Pumpkin Carving Party the next day, Oct. 29, during which youth and their families could carve pumpkins to take home for the gourd-geous holiday.

La Cocina, an open-air market in King City, hosted a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Oct. 28, which included food, music and dancing, as well as a Catrina Contest with prizes.

Among this year’s performers were Pilar Mendoza’s Folkorico group called Arcoiris Cultural, made up of local children and young teenagers, from Greenfield.
