Monterey County high school students invited to meet Ambassador Taylor

MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE) has announced its partnership with the World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay Area (WACMB) to host a free after-school event for high school students and teachers to meet and hear from Ambassador William B. Taylor.

The event will be held Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Monterey County Office of Education, 901 Blanco Circle, in Salinas.

Taylor will engage with high school students and faculty on Ukraine and Russian current affairs. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 continues to cause serious destruction on many levels as the world struggles to find a resolution that will settle the conflict. Some common questions are: Is there a path to victory for Ukraine? What are the prospects for a negotiated peace? What are the obstacles?

Taylor, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine from 2006 to 2009 and charge d’affaires in 2019, will draw on his firsthand experience in Ukraine to discuss the current situation. He is currently vice president, Europe and Russia, at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.

The World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay Area is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote public education, raise the standards of public debate, and encourage dialogue through the study and discussion of international issues.

MCOE shares the conviction of WACMB that “we need to prepare our youth for the globally interconnected world.”

For additional information or to attend the event, contact local WACMB coordinator Linda Dilger at 831-224-6292.
