MONTEREY COUNTY — Residents with a passion for public service and a keen interest in local government are encouraged to apply for a position on the Monterey County Civil Grand Jury.
The upcoming term will run from June 13, 2025, to June 30, 2026, and applications for volunteer jurors are currently being accepted until May 2.
The Civil Grand Jury serves as an independent watchdog, monitoring the actions of local city and county officials. It plays a critical role in maintaining government accountability by responding to citizen complaints, conducting thorough investigations, and accessing public officials, employees and records. The Grand Jury’s annual report is a significant document that local governments must address, responding to its findings and recommendations.
Jurors, appointed by the Superior Court, serve for a one-year term and reflect a diverse array of backgrounds and life experiences, enhancing the jury’s effectiveness. Community members from all walks of life are encouraged to participate, as this diversity is one of the Grand Jury’s greatest assets.
Interested individuals can apply by submitting an application online through the designated link provided on the official website under the section titled “Volunteer Civil Grand Jury.” Alternatively, applicants may download a hard copy of the application and mail or deliver it to the Superior Court Offices specified in the document.
In addition, all prospective jurors are invited to attend one of three upcoming interviews and informational sessions scheduled for May. The first session will take place on Wednesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Monterey Courthouse in the Jury Assembly Room. The second session is on Thursday, May 8, at the same time at the Salinas Courthouse, also in the Jury Assembly Room. The third and final session will occur on Friday, May 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the King City Courthouse.
This is a unique opportunity to represent the community and influence the improvement of local governmental services. Those interested in promoting transparency and accountability in government are urged to consider this important civic role.
