To the Editor:
Last week I wrote a guest column on the Western Flyer, the legendary boat that took John Steinbeck and Doc Ricketts to the sea of Cortez in 1940.
A reader pointed out it wasn’t all about community, that Carol Steinbeck helped a great deal on the trip and was never mentioned in Steinbeck’s writing, including the “Sea of Cortez” books. It was rumored she and the boat captain had an affair and the couple soon divorced. It’s never all one way.
This weekend, I experienced small acts of kindness that totally balance the national ugliness we’ve been protesting Fridays at 4 p.m. at the King City sign.
A group of volunteers, including high school students, spent two days, sometimes in the rain, collecting items donated to Goodwill to raise funds for the local food pantry. Their efforts ensure that local families have enough to eat.
When I asked, the manager of Starbucks spontaneously contributed a box of hot coffee, and the church luncheon I attended gave all their leftovers to share with the volunteers.
“MAKE AMERICA KIND AGAIN” is a sign I’ve seen at larger demonstrations. Each of us is doing that in ways small and large. Let’s keep up the good work.
