To the Editor:
The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, which is an eight-year plan to citizenship, was revealed by Democrats on Capitol Hill. This bill would apply to roughly 11 million migrants who are currently living in the United States without legal status.
This citizenship would allow for undocumented immigrants a five-year temporary status, after that they can apply for a green card. Three years after that, they can apply for citizenship.
This bill will also allow the investment in technology and other funding at the southern border, helping border security enforcement to clampdown on drug smugglers and other illegal networks.
In order for this legislation to proceed in the Senate, it will need to attract 10 Republican votes, unless Democrats can eliminate or reform the filibuster, causing the bill to pass without a Republican vote.
During a press conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the bill might have to be broken up in order to pass through Congress. Republican lawmakers have all attacked the proposal in some way.
President Joe Biden’s plan will create a $4 billion investment plan that would help create safe pathways for immigration and help them stop fleeing from their home countries.
President Biden’s approach is to get to the root cause of migrants fleeing their home countries. The $4 billion investment will confront corruption, reinforce security and foster prosperity in urban communities to discourage migrants from immigrating to the United States.
I am with the passing of this bill. Immigrants who are currently in the United States have paid their taxes like any other citizen and have also helped boost America’s economic growth.
I also hope that this legislation for citizenship opens up the opportunity to legalize DREAMers who came to the United States as young children.
