SOUTH COUNTY — With over half the league season completed, the King City Lady Mustangs are in second place in team standings with a 7-1 record. King City won two games last week, defeating the host Carmel Padres 3-1 and beating the Pacific Grove Breakers on the road.

Grace Shepherd had 26 kills in the 25-21, 25-22, 13-25, 27-25 win over the Padres. Contributing with kills for King City were Megan Flores (8), Delany Carroll (6), and Nancy Andrade with five kills. Flores led King City with three blocks, Shepherd had two and Carroll had two. Shepherd had a team-high with 24 digs followed by Andrade (15), Flores (15), and Cassidy Flores with seven. Flores added 29 assists and Cassidy Flores finished with 17 assists. Outstanding serving in the match was provided by Kayla Silva and Julyssa Arreola.

The Lady Mustangs played another four-game match with the Breakers, winning 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-13. Shepherd and Megan Flores had double figures in kills with 22 and 12 respectively. Andrade had five kills, Carroll had three, and Cassidy Flores finished with two. In assists Megan Flores had 25 and Cassidy Flores added 19. Carroll led King City with two blocks, Megan Flores had two blocks, and Cassidy Flores had one block. Ana Mendez was the leader in digs with 16, Andrade had 10, Megan Flores finished with 10, and Julyssa Arreola added 6.

King City (12-1 overall) played yesterday at Robert Louis Stevenson and will host the league-leading Santa Catalina Cougars tomorrow at home. On Saturday the Lady Mustangs will play at the Everett Alvarez Volleyball Tournament in Salinas.

Soledad High in 4-4 in the MTAL and 6-6 overall after splitting a pair of games with Pacific Grove and Anzar. The Aztecs lost in three sets to the Breakers (25-18, 25-18, 25-10) and defeated the Anzar Hawks in four (25-10, 25-12, 19-25, 25-15). Yesterday the Aztecs hosted Carmel and tomorrow will play at Gonzales.

Gonzales High is 0-7 in the MTAL with losses last week to Anzar and Stevenson. The Spartans played yesterday in Monterey against Santa Catalina and will host Soledad tomorrow night. In Coastal League play the Greenfield Bruins are 1-4 after a three-game loss to Oakwood on Oct. 3. Greenfield plays tomorrow at Marina.
