Mee Memorial Healthcare System is the sole hospital serving South Monterey County. For more than 60 years, it has been the community’s primary source of hospital-based care, emergency services and recovery.

In a region defined by distance, limited transportation and economic vulnerability, our role is both essential and impactful. Without Mee Memorial, timely access to care for South Monterey County residents would be challenging, and we continuously strive to ensure that we are focused on community needs, equity, access and wellness. It is our mission to ensure that care is local, coordinated, culturally responsive and patient-centered, regardless of income, language or circumstance.

One of the most significant health issues identified through recent community health needs assessments has been the prevalence of diabetes. In response to this, Mee Memorial has established a Diabetes Outreach Program focused on education, prevention and long-term disease management.

With a two-pronged approach that combines community outreach and a dedicated diabetes educator, we provide our community with education and individuals with support. This program strengthens health literacy, encourages healthier life choices, and reduces the risk of long-term complications, improving health outcomes and laying a stronger foundation for chronic disease management.

Mee Memorial’s Transitional Care services are a key contributor to our commitment to meeting the unique needs of rural patients. When patients require recovery support following a major surgery, serious illness or traumatic injury initially treated outside the area, we offer transitional care locally, allowing patients to recover close to family and community support systems. In a rural setting where distance can limit visitation and follow-up care, this service is critical in supporting recovery and patient well-being.

Strategic investment in infrastructure has also been essential to keeping care close to home. Recent and ongoing upgrades to our diagnostic imaging services and Emergency Department are expanding on-site capabilities. This will result in faster diagnosis and minimize the need for patients to travel long distances for essential services. These improvements directly enhance access, timeliness, and outcomes, particularly for patients who might otherwise delay or forgo care due to distance or cost.

We have also embraced technological infrastructure, adopting software tools such as LUMA to strengthen patient communication, improve efficiency, enhance care coordination and streamline the appointment-making process.

Finally, we recognize that workforce sustainability is one of rural healthcare’s most urgent challenges. Through our new Student Pathway Internship Program, developed in partnership with the local school district, we are introducing high school students to a variety of healthcare career options within their community, supporting long-term workforce stability and the future of rural healthcare in South Monterey County.

Our entire team remains committed to responding to today’s needs, while investing in a healthier, more resilient future for the community we are honored to serve.
