GREENFIELD — Greenfield Union School District (GUSD) has appointed Laura Cortez as interim superintendent following a unanimous 5-0 vote by the school board in October.

“We are confident that Mrs. Cortez’s leadership will guide our district towards continued success,” said Board President Denise Jaime. “Her extensive experience and unwavering dedication to education make her the ideal choice for this interim position.”

Cortez, who has served in various roles within the district for the past eight years, steps into the leadership role after the departure of former superintendent Zandra Jo Galvan, who was recently named superintendent of the Salinas Union High School District. GUSD officials emphasized that Cortez’s appointment ensures “continuity and stability” during this transition period.

With over two decades of experience in education, Cortez brings a wealth of expertise in both teaching and administration. Her career includes roles as a teacher, academic coach, school principal, district director and county office of education director. Most recently, she served as associate superintendent.

“This diverse array of positions underscores her comprehensive understanding of the educational landscape and her commitment to fostering academic excellence,” stated GUSD in a news release.

Cortez has also been instrumental in developing key educational programs aimed at improving student achievement, including the innovative LEGO Education initiative, core standards mapping and assessments. Her collaborative work with district teams has contributed to creating a well-rounded educational experience for students.

“As I step into this leadership role, I am determined to remain at the forefront of education, prioritizing student achievement in the months ahead,” Cortez said. “As a first-generation college graduate, I am deeply connected to the students I serve, and see reflections of my own journey in their experiences.”

Cortez holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from UC Santa Barbara, and a second master’s degree from San Jose State University. Her academic background and passion for education position her to continue inspiring both students and staff as they work toward excellence.

“Greenfield Union School District is excited about Mrs. Cortez’s leadership and the positive impact she will make on our students’ educational journeys,” concluded the district’s statement.
