GREENFIELD — An official search for Greenfield’s next permanent chief of police was announced in April by the city.

The current law enforcement commander is Capt. James Hunt, who has been the acting chief of police since May 2019, when former Chief Denise Chavez Oglesby was placed on leave.

Hunt has been with Greenfield Police for nearly two years, after retiring as a lieutenant from the San Jose Police Department. His acting chief duties were reinforced when Oglesby’s position was officially terminated by the city in a special meeting on Dec. 20.

The Greenfield chief would administer a budget of more than $5.5 million and oversee a staff of 21 sworn personnel, including two reserves, five non-sworn employees and one part-time employee.

The official notice of position opening states, “The ideal candidate will have solid administrative skills coupled with a ‘hands on’ leadership style, sense of humor, and proven ability to maintain positive community relationships with the business community, the schools, local clergy, advocacy groups, youth program providers and other local and regional law enforcement agencies.”

The city has also noted being able to interact with the multicultural community of Greenfield is essential, and bilingualism is preferred.

Candidates are expected to have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration or a related field. The position is described as having a salary range of $155,000 to $189,000.

The position’s filing deadline is May 22. Those interested should contact Nina Aguayo at Greenfield City Hall at 831-304-0307.
