GONZALES — Gonzales officials are recognizing National Public Health Week by celebrating the results of a fruitful collaboration with the Monterey County Health Department.

Over the past few years, the two entities have worked closely, applying for successful infrastructure and programming grants and by drafting a Health and Wellness Element for the city’s general plan. The celebration will take place Friday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to noon, in front of City Hall, rain or shine.

“This celebration is an opportunity for Gonzales residents to learn about current and future projects that will enhance the health and safety of their community,” said Carmen Gil, Health in All Policies Manager for the Monterey County Health Department. “There will also be information about opportunities for residents to get involved in creating a healthy, safe and prosperous Gonzales for all.”

This celebration is the cumulation of a year’s work alongside Gonzales residents, who helped create a draft Health and Wellness Element for Gonzales’ General Plan. The Health and Wellness Element provides the City with the opportunity to promote health, equity and sustainability and intentionally consider the community’s health making policy decisions for the city.

“This Health Element is a great example of this year’s National Public Health Week theme, ‘Working together for a safe, healthy and thriving Monterey County,'” said Elsa Jimenez, Director of Health. “It is only fitting that we should celebrate along with the City of Gonzales as they are moving towards a healthier, safer and more prosperous place for all.”

Everyone is invited to the celebration to learn more about the opportunities to engage. There will be prizes and free activities for children.
