GONZALES — Gonzales High School’s football team of 1974 will become the first Salinas Valley high school football program to enter the acclaimed Salinas Valley Sports Hall of Fame (SVSHOF).

The 11th annual SVSHOF event will take place this Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Storm House, 185 Maryal Drive, in Salinas.

Other inductees for 2025 include: Gordy Dillard (Baseball Athlete); Max and Kathy Garcia (Boxing Coaches); Alex Golomeic (Soccer and Tennis Coach); Jens-Uwe Gordon (Basketball Athlete); Mike Maker (Basketball Athlete and Coach); Steve Raine (Football, Wrestling, Baseball Athlete); Dan Teresa (Athlete, Coach, Administrator); Jackie Wayland (Softball Athlete).

While the Spartans finished with a 9-1 overall record, an early 14-7 loss at home forced Gonzales to win the rest of their remaining four Mission Trail Athletic League games. 

The Spartans won those games averaging 430 yards on offense and held the four league opponents to a 108-yards average.

Players of the 1974 team were: David Raffile, Mike Brusa, Doug Arneson, Steve Wiley, Ron Stanfield, Tim Ryan, Mike Silva, Marty Corda, Steve Simonetti, Jeff Sommer, Kenny Escher, Richard Correa, Carlos Nieto, David Guzman, Kevin Piercy, David Deleissegues, David Luna, Fred Ledesma, Jose Nieto, Steve Brusa, Terry Rianda, David Gardoni, John Gardoni, Julian De La Torre, Ben Jaime, Art Guedea, Ken Davila and Gerald Latasa.

Coaches for the team included: Larry Welsh (head coach), Steve Ponsi, John Pettas, Rudy Meza and team trainer David Wiley.
