GONZALES — Gonzales Community Pool is looking for swimsuit donations to help provide appropriate swimwear for children.

The swimsuits that are donated will be given for free to children who do not have the right swimwear. Each donor will receive a two-visit punch pass for every suit donated.

According to the City of Gonzales, in 2017 over 120 suits were given away to youth in need.

Why is it important to wear the right swimwear? According to the Department of Parks and Recreation, wearing street clothes, especially cotton, can transport airborne and ultimately waterborne contaminants into the pool. Lycra and nylon are the best non-absorbent material for swimming and the best fabrics for proper swim attire. Other absorbent materials, such as cotton, can break down in the water and cause fibers to clog filters.

If a material is colored and not made for swimming, it can cause the fabric to bleed into the pool, which affects water chemistry and balance.

Those same materials not made for swimming can absorb the chemicals in the water, causing the water to become less effective at maintaining the proper chemical balance or may cloud the water.

Swimsuits can to brought to Gonzales City Hall on 147 Fourth St. to get free passes.
