GONZALES — The Gonzales Spartan boys basketball team will have a chance to secure the Coastal League tonight when they host the Marina Mariners in the Roger Fernando Gym.
Gonzales (7-1), will be the visiting team in their own gym for the game as Marina does not have their own gym.
“We’ve focused for Marina tonight as they are 7-1 as well and the game is here again even though we are the away team,” said Gonzales head coach Bo Bueller. “We will win out (league), if we win the game. Marina has three guys, (Cottrell Ealey, Jordan Chaty, and freshman Jaiden Russell) who are scorers, as well as football All-Leaguer, Fermin Gabot. The last time we played we won 79-78 in overtime.”
The Spartans prepared for the showdown with Marina by defeating the Pacific Collegiate Pumas 61-34 last Thursday night.
Pablo Villasenor had a double-double with 23 points and 27 rebounds, including 13 rebounds on the offensive end.
Jonathan Ganaden came off the bench for 14 points and Isaiah Banuelos, who is averaging a double-double had 12 points and nine rebounds in limited action.
“We struggled to shoot the ball as we were coming off a three-game week and were out of rhythm offensively. Pablo (Villasenor), was able to clean up missed shots and convert them into points. Defense has been our backbone all year and standouts were Alex Morga, Gonzalo Villagomez, and Xavier Cervantes. We really forced them into bad shots and rebounded well.”
After the game with Marina the Spartans will have a home game with Ceiba College Prep on Feb. 13 and finish the regular league season with a Feb. 15 home game with York.
