GONZALES — Gonzales High’s cheer team hosted its first Cheer Camp inside the Roger Fernando Gym at the school on July 19.
The young campers learned two cheers and chants, along with a dance.
According to cheer head coach Leanna Godoy, the participants included a mix of girls that were part of the Gonzales Knights Football cheer group and girls that were new to cheerleading and live in the local communities.
“Part of the cheer program is to give back to the community,” Godoy said. “We began the planning for this camp in April and May. I received a lot of support from our assistant coaches, Challie Lorente and Rachel Lorente, and by the Gonzales Knights. We had 18 of our high school cheer team help run the camp and had about 20 campers attend.”
The campers enjoyed snacks and drinks throughout the day at the gym, which was decorated in a circus theme. Lunch was prepared by the Gonzales Knights Football Program.
Godoy and her staff will now focus on preparing the high school cheer squad for the start of the football season.
“We will continue to prepare for the upcoming fall season by making sure the girls are prepared for each game,” Godoy said. “We want the girls to be confident in every cheer, performance and event throughout the cheer season.”

Great way to give back to community. I’m sure this helped build character & confidence for these young participants. Also, this must of helped the Gonzales cheerleaders learn leadership skills. It was a win-win situation for both!
