GONZALES — City of Gonzales has appointed Mark Hartunian as assistant city manager, officials recently announced.

In collaboration with City Manager Rene Mendez, Hartunian will be responsible for the overall management analysis and administration coordination for the city.

“As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, he will work on top-level special projects and will directly oversee and ensure the operations of the Community Development/Planning, Public Works, Building Department and the City Hall functions,” according to the City in a news release March 11.

Hartunian has worked for the City of Gonzales for six years as the deputy city manager/special projects director. 

Prior to that, he worked for the City of Soledad as a mid-manager in Soledad City Hall and was a police investigator and police management analyst for the Soledad Police Department.

Before joining the City of Soledad, Hartunian was employed as an investigator III with the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. While serving as an investigator for the Soledad Police Department and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, he was an instructor for the Monterey Peninsula College Police Academy.   

Prior to joining the government sector, Hartunian worked for 14 years for various private sector companies and “achieved a great deal of success managing social service programs, administrative resource centers, public transportation divisions, interstate and intrastate transportation operations, and distribution and production operations,” the release stated. 

Hartunian, who also served in the U.S. Army as an administrative specialist and received an Honorable Discharge, earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from the Monterey College of Law in 1998. He is currently a lecturer at San Jose State University and teaches evening courses for the Department of Justice Studies.
