SALINAS VALLEY — Residents of South Monterey County are shaping the future of local education services, with all school bond measures currently passing in the latest results for the Presidential General Election held on Nov. 5. Below is a summary of each measure, requiring at least 55% approval to pass, and its impact on the region.

Measure E

Soledad Unified School District’s Measure E, currently passing with 1,484 votes or 61.20%, will authorize $42 million in bonds to renovate and improve district schools. The funds are allocated to ensure ADA compliance, repair facilities, and construct a new track and field at Soledad High School. This measure includes an average levy of $60 per $100,000 of assessed valuation, generating approximately $2.5 million annually.

Measures H and I

Two measures, H and I, proposed by the South Monterey County Joint Union High School District, covering King City and Greenfield high schools, are both passing with votes of 2,527 (59.84%) and 2,527 (59.81%), respectively.

  • Measure H: Allocating $35 million to upgrade classrooms and vocational facilities, including hazardous material removal, with a proposed tax rate of $30 per $100,000 assessed valuation, raising about $2.6 million annually.
  • Measure I: Focuses on safety improvements for emergency communication systems, fire alarms, and security upgrades, with a similar funding approach as Measure H.

Measure J

Passing with 155 votes or 60.55%, Chualar Union School District’s Measure J will issue $5.6 million in bonds for essential repairs and upgrades, such as leaky roof repairs and modernized classrooms. The tax rate for this measure averages $29.79 per $100,000 of assessed value, bringing in about $353,000 annually.

Measures K and L

In the King City Union School District, both Measure K and Measure L are currently passing with votes of 1,101 (64.09%) and 1,088 (63.59%), respectively.

  • Measure K: Requests $19.8 million to address roof, plumbing, and electrical system repairs across district schools, with a tax levy averaging below $26 per $100,000 assessed valuation.
  • Measure L: Proposes $21.6 million to enhance school safety and update classroom technology, with funding mechanisms similar to those of Measure K.

Measure N

Mission Union Elementary School District’s Measure N, which is passing with 55 votes or 69.62%, aims to issue $1.5 million in bonds to repair and improve school facilities and ensure necessary safety updates. This measure will generate approximately $114,000 annually at a low cost to local homeowners.
