CARMEL VALLEY — A community emergency preparedness gathering is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, at Rancho Cañada (former golf course) in the Fiesta Room Club House from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in Carmel Valley.
The three main introductory speakers are Supervisor Mary Adams, Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal and a representative from Congressman Jimmy Panetta’s office.
The nine panelists will discuss what to do in the event of a wild fire, earthquake, flood or tsunami.
Special attention will be focused on the upkeep of firebreaks and fuelbreak, to prevent wildfires from entering Carmel Valley proper, which almost occurred during last summer fires. The representative from Panetta’s office, and Lorin Letendre and Joe Rawitzer from the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy, will focus on what citizens can do to help ensure annual maintenance of fuelbreaks.
Other panelists include Fire Chief Michael Urquides from Monterey County Regional Fire District; Gerry Malais from Office of Emergency Services; Chief Brennan Blue or Jonathan Pangburn from Cal-Fire; Patsy H. Gasca from the Red Cross; Rosanna Leighton from the SPCA; and Lorin Letendre from the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy.
