SALINAS VALLEY — Conditioning and training continues on the local playing fields this week for all four South Monterey County high school football teams.
The passing game was on exhibit last Wednesday, July 7, at Greenfield High for the second week of seven-on-seven football, welcoming teams from King City, Soledad and Gonzales high schools. King City High hosted the first week on June 30.
Soledad High Head Coach Jose Martinez and the Aztecs will be hosting the third week of seven-on-seven passing league today, July 14, at 5 p.m. at the school’s Gene Martin Stadium.
“Training is going good and we are going back to 6 a.m. weightlifting,” Martinez said about the Aztec football program. “We have hired Josh Fernandez, one of the owners of Richard Russell Cross Fit, to design athletic workouts for our kids. Really excited about that. Seven-on-seven gives us a chance to get full-speed reps.”
Martinez said he is excited about coaching this season and wants his players to keep working hard to earn playing time on the Aztec varsity football team.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but that’s why we have the seven-on-sevens to identify what we need to work on,” he said. “I am starting to become more familiar with my athletes, but I like to not jump to conclusions too early. I remind my guys everyday that there are no starters and every job is up for grabs.”
After today’s games at Soledad, the four football teams will then head to Gonzales High on July 21.
