SALINAS VALLEY — The Soledad and Greenfield high school football teams finished the preseason schedule last week and are both 2-2 as they begin divisional play this week.
Last Friday Soledad played at home and dominated the Santa Cruz Cardinals, 42-3.
In the lopsided game with Santa Cruz, the Aztecs’ Gio Gallegos and Julio Camacho both rushed for over 100 yards and quarterback DJ Valenzuela just missed the 100-yard mark.
“I was proud the players had a good week of practice and came out executing our game plan,” said Aztecs head coach Mark Villanueva. “Most important of all, we came out healthy and ready for league play. I’m proud of the efforts on defense by defensive ends Chris Rua Chico and Dominik Diaz. They were very problematic for Santa Cruz when they tried to run the ball. We face a real test with our league opener versus Carmel this Friday.”
On Saturday, Greenfield traveled to Santa Cruz County and lost 12-7 to the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars in Felton.
The Bruins led 7-6 as quarterback Chris Morris and receiver Hector Garcia hooked for a touchdown pass play. The Cougars, however, secured the win with a touchdown in the final quarter.
“The game didn’t go as planned as we struggled to find our rhythm in the first half and you won’t win a lot of games playing two quarters of football,” said Bruins head coach Adam Barsenas. “SLV is a much-improved team and their coaching staff has them headed in the right direction.”
The Bruins will host the North Salinas Vikings (2-2) on Friday in the Mission Division opener for both teams.
