Football | Pacific Grove ends Greenfield’s perfect season

GREENFIELD — The last time the Greenfield Bruins started 3-0 they went to the playoffs, but now the Bruins were looking to do something they haven’t done in school history, and that was to start the season off 4-0.

Entering the Bruins stadium, one could feel something missing as a Thursday game really took the crowd out and the excitement level of the players wasn’t there.

As the Sept. 14 game kicked off, the Pacific Grove Breakers were controlling the first half. Pacific Grove was able to control the time of possession, and they were converting on third down throughout the first half and the third quarter.

The Breakers dominated the first three quarters of football, as they were up 21-0. Their defense was able to keep the Bruins offense from getting any type of momentum in the game.

The good news for the Bruins was that they did find some magic come the fourth quarter. Starting quarterback Naythen Hernandez found Hector Garcia for his longest touchdown of the season and went for 55 yards. The Bruins still had a long way to go, as they cut the lead to 14.

In the second half, the Bruins’ defense played a lot better as they were able to contain the PG offense. Greenfield needed a big turnover, and they were able to get it that would set up the offense to get to a seven-point game.

Running back AJ Martinez got a touchdown to make the score 21-14.

The Bruins got a chance at the end of the game to tie it but ultimately came up short to the Breakers, dropping their first game of the season and moving to a 3-1 record.

Greenfield still has a chance to win the title. They have a bye this week before playing their first league game against an up-and-coming Harbor team on Sept. 29.
