GREENFIELD — Wonder Wood Ranch (WWR), a Monterey County-based nonprofit known for transforming lives through equine therapy, has announced its expansion to Valley View Ranch Equine Rescue in South Monterey County.

This bold move brings life-changing programming closer to the communities of Greenfield and King City — areas deeply affected by youth violence and limited access to supportive services.

With a mission to serve at-risk and justice-involved youth, WWR is launching a new initiative that combines equine rescue, trauma-informed care and workforce development. The expansion will provide local youth with hands-on training in animal care, ranch management and emergency rescue operations — skills that open doors to meaningful careers and brighter futures.

ā€œSouth County youth deserve hope, healing and opportunity,ā€ said Marlo Schalesky, executive director of Wonder Wood Ranch. ā€œBy expanding to Valley View, we’re not just rescuing horses — we’re rescuing futures.ā€

Key highlights of the expansion include:

  • Local Access: A new site just 15 minutes from Greenfield and King City, reducing barriers to participation;
  • Workforce Development: Youth will gain certifications in animal rescue and emergency response, preparing them for careers in high-demand fields;
  • Safe Housing: Onsite accommodation for 1-4 youth in the advanced program; and
  • Community Impact: A response to the urgent need for culturally responsive, pro-social youth interventions in one of California’s most underserved regions.

WWR is seeking $150,000 in funding to support start-up costs and the first year of operations. The organization has a proven track record of success, with partnerships across 70-plus agencies and a commitment to trauma-informed, evidence-based practices.
