SALINAS VALLEY — Local high school runners and flag football players will be competing this week with championship hopes for cross country, and the chance to play in a season-ending tournament for flag football.
CROSS COUNTRY
On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL) Cross Country Championships will take place on the Palo Corona course in Carmel Valley.
Races will be contested in the varsity boys and girls division, the JV boys and girls division, and the frosh-soph boys division. The frosh-soph girls will run the same time at the JV girls division.
Runners in the varsity boys and girls divisions will be competing for team titles and individual and team qualifying to the Central Coast Section championships that will be contested on Nov. 16.
FLAG FOOTBALL
The 10 teams that competed in the PCAL will be competing in the end-of-season flag football tournament that began on Monday. South Monterey County will be represented by the King City Lady Mustangs that were seeded third in the tournament.
King City will play number six seed Palma on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Salinas.
King City placed third in the Gabilan Division behind Hollister and Salinas and finished with a 9-5 divisional record and were 17-7 overall. Palma had an overall record of 13-3 in the Mission Division.
The semifinals will be played later that same evening and the finals will be played on Saturday.
Next year flag football will be part of the Central Coast Section playoff format.
