SOLEDAD — Last Sunday, Aug. 11, two groups from Soledad and one from Salinas organized a Back to School Giveaway in downtown Soledad.

Soledad Hair Company and Happy Hour Mobile Bar, along with MOKU Shaved Ice from Salinas gave away 90 haircuts, 250 backpacks and 150 servings of shaved ice, respectively, at 709 Front St.

“Thank you to all the amazing people that were part of this event,” said Jeremiah Fernandez of Happy Hour Mobile Bar. “It is an extreme blessing to be giving back to the community that shaped us into who we are today. We were able to give out 250 backpacks, along with school supplies.”

Ervin Pizano of the Soledad Hair Company and his staff provided haircuts in a little over four hours of work so that the youngsters who attended would look sharp for their first days of school.

“Being able to partner up to make this event happen was great,” Pizano said. “I already had the people to provide the haircuts, and Jaime Fernandez and Alexis Padilla had organized the backpack and school supplies. Chanelle Ceralde of MOKU Shaved Iced from Salinas heard about the event and came down to donate free shaved ice. The kids were excited receiving the school supplies, getting a haircut and enjoying a cool treat.”

Fernandez was pleased that the event was so successful and was able to help out the students of Soledad.

“We hope to not only prepare these children for the school year ahead, but to show them their community believes in them and supports their journey,” Fernandez said. “I am fortunate to have a friend who shares our passion for giving back, and who gathered a group of young talented barbers to provide the free haircuts for students from our community.”
