GONZALES — The Gonzales High tennis team lost a pair of matches last week, dropping contests to the visiting Pacific Grove Breakers and the Santa Catalina Cougars. The Breakers and Cougars shut down the Spartans by 7-0 scores.
Gonzales head coach Rene Mendez praised his team for their play against formidable programs.
“We’re missing several players from the top 10, but the girls that played did well,” said Mendez. “As a whole the team was a bit tight and couldn’t get untracked. Our singles players did well against a tough opponent. Athena Landeros continues to improve every match and against Pacific Grove Elizabeth Arreola played her best match of the year. She hung in there and was a few points away from winning the second set.”
Yesterday the Spartans traveled to Monterey to play the York School and tomorrow will host the Carmel Padres.
