SALINAS VALLEY — This past weekend was the start of the Central Coast Section (CCS) basketball playoffs, and South Monterey County was well represented with three teams in the postseason.
The local basketball teams that made it to the CCS playoffs were the Greenfield Bruins boys’ and girls’ teams, as well as the Soledad Aztecs girls’ team.
Greenfield Bruins
The Bruins had a great season on the basketball court this year, sending both boys’ and girls’ teams to the postseason.
The boys’ team made the postseason for the first time since 2019. On the final night of the regular season, the Bruins beat Monte Vista Christian, which was enough to convince the committee to give the nod to the Bruins over the other teams that also had a strong case.
In the first round of the CCS playoffs, the Bruins had to travel on the road to face Mount Pleasant in San Jose. The Bruin boys gave it their all, but their season came to an end as they came up short, 62-49.
When it comes to the Lady Bruins, there was no shock that they were able to make the playoffs again. The only question was if they could win another league title.
The Bruin girls had a great season, finishing in second place in the Mission Division with 18 wins. That would earn the Lady Bruins the sixth seed in the CCS playoffs. Unfortunately, they were upset by the 11th seed Del Mar, 41-29.
Soledad Aztecs
For the first time since 2018, the Lady Aztecs were able to capture a league title. This is the first time in the school’s history that they won the Mission Division.
When the Lady Aztecs were waiting for the call to get into the playoffs, many people thought they would have a home game, but the seeding committee placed them in the Division II bracket.
The Aztec girls ended up playing on the road to face Willow Glen. The Lady Aztecs’ season ended in San Jose as they lost 54-33.
