GONZALES — In their first game of the basketball season, the Gonzales High girls’ team defeated the visiting Harbor Pirates, 40-21, on Dec. 5.

Senior center Angelina Navarro scored 14 points and added 18 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

Priscilla Hurtado just missed double figures in scoring with nine points and filled her stat sheet with six rebounds and one blocked shot. Maria Rivera and Ailette Reyes combined for four blocked shots and 14 rebounds.

The Spartans will not play again until Jan. 7 at Notre Dame High School in Salinas.

King City Lady Mustangs began the week with a 51-22 setback against Soledad, and then lost three straight games after that in the Coach Wilson Memorial Tournament at Pebble Beach.

Amity Hearne led King City in the home game with Soledad with eight points and Janesa Lopez added seven points.

King City fell to host Stevenson and Monterey in the first rounds of the tournament at Stevenson, and then 51-29 to Soledad in their final game. Alizah Carrillo led King City in scoring in the Soledad contest with nine points.

The Lady Mustangs will play at Coalinga on Thursday night.

Soledad defeated host Stevenson, 40-38, at the tournament and will travel to play Carmel on Wednesday night.

The Greenfield Bruins are 0-2 to start the pre-season, including last week’s 42-32 home loss to Rancho San Juan. The Bruins hosted Marina on Monday night.
