Applications due Friday for Monterey County film scholarship program

MONTEREY COUNTY — Applications are now being accepted for the Monterey County Film Commission’s Director Emeritus Richard Tyler Film Student Scholarship Award Program, the deadline of which to apply online is Nov. 10.

This year the program plans to award students up to $2,000 in scholarship awards. For eligibility details and online application forms, go to FilmMonterey.org/scholarships/.

The scholarship program was created to provide financial aid and incentive to students of film and beginning filmmakers who live in Monterey County, or who are currently enrolled in a community college or university in the county.

The fund was established as a permanent endowment with the Community Foundation for Monterey County. It is designed to help a college student work toward a career in film.

“We are excited to again recognize college students passionate about using their voice and talent in visual storytelling,” said Tanya Olson, the Monterey County Film Commission scholarship committee chairperson. “We want to help provide financial assistance to the next generation of filmmakers to make their projects a reality and to enhance their productions.”

Funding has been supported by the Craig and Paula Tigerman family, Dino Cocalis, Honest Engine Films, Carmel Sunset Rotary, the Monterey International Pop Festival Foundation, and other local businesses and individuals.

The 2022 scholarships went to David Orta, a film student at Hartnell College; Laska Stanford, a California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) student in the Cinematic Arts and Technology Department; and Diego Garcia, also a CSUMB film student.
