GONZALES — The Gonzales High tennis team is 2-1 in league after a road loss to Christopher High in Gilroy and a home win against the Gilroy High Mustangs. Gonzales lost 5-2 to Christopher and beat Gilroy High by a 7-0 last Thursday on the Spartan tennis courts.
On Sept. 25, Gonzales earned two wins in doubles play and lost five matches in singles play: SINGLES — Itzel Carreon def. Athena Landeros (GON) 0-6, 1-6; Aubree Tomasetti def. Adilenne Ramirez (GON) 1-6, 0-6; Yashila Suresh def. Elizabeth Arreola (GON) 2-6, 1-6; Denielle Russel def. Isabel Mendoza (GON) 2-6, 5-7; DOUBLES — Jacqueline Ramirez and Melanie Barrera (GON) def. Lauren Riewerts 6-4, 6-1; Daniella Pacheco and Iris Valdez (GON) def. Azella Briceno and Sophia Jimenez 6-4, 6-3.
“Athena never got on track and Adi has been our most consistent player but today was just not her day,” said Gonzales head coach Rene Mendez.
Mendez added, “In doubles it was a great win for Jacky and Melanie. The match could have gone our way and the team is looking forward for our next match with Christopher.”
Last Thursday against the visiting Gilroy Mustangs, Gonzales won four singles matches and three doubles matches: SINGLES — Athena Landeros def. Emma Beck 6-0, 6-1; Adilenne Ramirez def. Gizema Mendez 6-1, 6-3; Elizabeth Arreola def. Yliana Salermo 6-2, 6-2; Isabel Mendoza def. Kristine Figuracion 6-0, 6-0. Winners for Gonzales in the doubles competition were: Jacqueline Ramirez and Melanie Barrera; Daniella Pacheco and Iris Valdez; and Magaly Santos and Carolina Perez-Reyes.
“Strong match for Athena, she kept focused and stayed within herself,” said Coach Mendez. “Good matches for Adie and Eli and Isabel played great and owned the fact that this was her match to win. Our doubles team figured out how to win and we had strong matches from Dani and Iris.”
Yesterday the Spartans played against Pajaro Valley in Watsonville and will host Oakwood tomorrow afternoon.
