SOUTH COUNTY — Gonzales High School and Soledad High School each had a wrestler place sixth to medal in at the Central Coast Section Girls Championship that took place on Friday and Saturday at Overfelt High School in San Jose.

Maria Lopez placed sixth at 131 pounds for Gonzales and Veronica Garcia-Ramirez placed sixth at 106 pounds for Soledad.

Menlo-Atherton won the team championship, followed by Alisal at second and Gilroy in third. Soledad placed 32nd as a team with 22 points and Gonzales placed 38th with 16 points. Greenfield placed 52nd and King City placed 55th.

Lopez and Garcia-Ramirez wrestler for fifth place but were beaten in the finals. The top three placers in each weight class will compete at the CIF State Championships on Feb. 23-24 at the Visalia Conference Center.

The Gonzales boys team competed at the Ninth Annual Colt Invitational held at El Camino High School on Saturday in South San Francisco. The Spartans placed second out of 47 teams.

Spartan placers were: Miguel Mendoza, 2nd at 113; Gregorio Alfaro, 3rd at 128; Eric Correa, 4th at 132; Antonio Viorato, 2nd at 162; Eric Albarran, 2nd at 172; Robert Ochoa, 1st at 197. Also competing was Angel Anguiano who finished 3-2.

Ochoa was voted the Outstanding Wrestler pinning all his opponents. Gonzales will be wrestling on Feb. 15 at the Mission Trail Athletic League Championships that will be hosted by Pacific Grove High School starting at 5 p.m.
