SALINAS VALLEY — King City High’s flag football team is in a first-place tie at 3-1 in the Mission Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League.
King City Mustangs played just one divisional game last week, defeating host North Salinas by a 42-12 score.
At North Salinas, the Mustangs’ Shyrah McDonald scored three touchdowns with one on a reception, one on a punt return and a third on an interception. McDonald caught three receptions for 98 yards and contributed with three sacks.
King City quarterback Katia Slama finished with a 17-of-20 passing performance for 209 yards. Slama had three touchdown passes, rushed for 55 yards and scored on a rushing touchdown.
Sofia Perez had one reception and a touchdown, while Joscelyn Acevedo had one receiving touchdown and one interception. Melissa Iglesias and Juju Ramirez each had an interception.
Last Thursday the Mustangs lost to Santa Clara, 26-19, on the road. Santa Clara entered the game as the No. 6 ranked team in the Central Coast Section.
“It was a great effort on the road,” said King City head coach Brent Slama. “We got the ball down to the 10-yard line at the end of the game but couldn’t come up with the tying score.”
Slama was 35-of-56 passing for 343 yards, threw for two touchdowns and ran in one score. McDonald had 11 receptions for 97 yards; Heidi Medina had eight receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown; and Alondra Herrejon added nine receptions for 83 yards.
King City hosted Pacific Collegiate on Monday, after press deadlines, and will host Watsonville on Wednesday night and Alisal on Thursday.
Soledad is 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Mission Division with losses last week to Pajaro Valley (13-0), Everett Alvarez (9-2) and Palma by a 14-7 score. The Aztecs played at Watsonville on Monday and will travel to Salinas on Wednesday for a game with North Salinas.
Greenfield was .500 for the week, losing to Rancho San Juan on the road by a 7-6 score and defeating host North Salinas, 25-13.
The Bruins hosted the Seaside Spartans on Monday and will play at Marina on Wednesday.
