MONTEREY COUNTY — Transportation Agency for Monterey County is seeking public input on a plan to improve walking and biking safety on local streets and roadways.
TAMC will host a series of community engagement events beginning this weekend and continuing through the fall as part of the Monterey County Active Transportation Plan. The effort includes tabling at community events, forming community focus groups and launching a countywide survey in English and Spanish.
The planning team will visit one community event in each of the county’s 12 cities and two events in unincorporated Monterey County. TAMC also plans to host one focus group in each city and two in unincorporated areas.
Residents can provide input by visiting TAMC’s table at a community event, joining a focus group or completing the online survey. Focus groups will provide an opportunity to examine the analysis behind the proposed active transportation network and discuss potential solutions to common challenges faced by community members.
Upcoming community events include the Marina Multi-Cultural Festival on Sept. 26, Oaxaca by the Sea in Seaside on Sept. 27, El Mercadito in Soledad on Oct. 3, Ciclovia Salinas on Oct. 4 and Ciclovia King City on Oct. 10.
Additional events include a gathering at St. Theodore Church in Gonzales on Oct. 15, the Harvest Festival in Greenfield on Oct. 18, the Wellness Resource Fair in Castroville on Oct. 25 and the Community Resource Fair in San Ardo on Oct. 29. More events will be announced.
Todd Muck, TAMC’s executive director, noted the importance of community participation in the planning process.
“Community members are the eyes and ears of what’s going on,” Muck said. “They know what the conditions are like for them as they travel back and forth from their homes, schools or jobs.”
He added, “We need their help to identify places that need improvements to make it safer for them to travel while promoting safe, healthy and equitable mobility for everyone.”
