Greenfield police schedules DUI checkpoint
GREENFIELD — Greenfield Police Department will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint Sept. 18 from 6 to 10 p.m. at an undisclosed location within the city limits.
The department said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of crashes involving impaired driving. The checkpoints are intended to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
Police reminded drivers that impairment can result from alcohol, prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. Although medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
The program is funded through a California Office of Traffic Safety Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant.

Read to Me Project opens downtown Salinas office
SALINAS — Read to Me Project will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for its new community-facing office at 272 Main St. in downtown Salinas.
The ribbon cutting will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception and open house. The public is invited.
The new space will serve as a meeting place for program coordinators and a resource hub for family literacy. Read to Me Project provides literacy coaching through classroom presentations, after-school programs and family literacy workshops throughout Monterey County.
“Read to Me Project belongs to Monterey County, and we want to be deeply rooted in the communities we serve. This new home in the heart of Salinas brings us closer to our families, schools and partners as we build Monterey County’s literacy movement together,” said Jason Little, executive director of Read to Me Project.
The event is being hosted in partnership with the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce. Attendees can tour the new office, meet the team and participate in a raffle featuring locally provided prizes.

Alzheimer’s Association receives $20K grant for Latino outreach
MONTEREY COUNTY — The Alzheimer’s Association Monterey Bay Region has received a $20,000 grant from the Margaret L. Musser Field of Interest Fund and Rapa Trust Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County to expand Alzheimer’s support for Latino communities.
The funding will support culturally responsive education, outreach and services for Latinos living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, as well as their families and caregivers. It also will help fund program staff and educational and outreach materials.
The Alzheimer’s Association offers no-cost programs and services in English and Spanish for Monterey County residents affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
“The Community Foundation for Monterey County’s many years of support of the Alzheimer’s Association has helped us to serve the residents of Monterey County affected by this terrible disease,” said Philip M. Geiger, regional director of the Alzheimer’s Association.
