GONZALES — Adventure Seeking Seniors and the Gonzales Youth Guardians brought generations together earlier this month for a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon focused on community service, mentorship and recognizing local volunteers.
The Aug. 8 luncheon gave an opportunity for seniors and local youth to work side by side while sharing knowledge, experiences and life skills. Seniors taught the youth how to set tables, prepare the dining area, serve guests, work as a team and help create a welcoming environment.
While the tasks may seem simple, organizers said they provide lessons in responsibility, teamwork, respect, communication and service to others.
“Our seniors have so much wisdom and experience to share, and our youth have so much energy and potential,” said Jean Salcido, president of Adventure Seeking Seniors. “Bringing these two generations together allows our seniors to teach valuable life skills while giving our youth an opportunity to learn, serve and give back to their community.”
Adventure Seeking Seniors began in 2019 with about 50 seniors and has grown into a monthly program serving approximately 250 seniors in the Gonzales community. The organization also provides meals to homebound seniors.
Salcido said the organization’s work would not be possible without its volunteers, making the luncheon an opportunity to recognize those who have given their time and energy to serving local seniors.
The event also provided an opportunity for members of the Gonzales Youth Guardians to experience community service firsthand and learn from the seniors.
“The luncheon was more than an appreciation event. It was a bridge between generations,” Salcido said.
The seniors shared their knowledge while the youth put those lessons into practice, creating what Salcido described as an atmosphere of fellowship, respect and community spirit.
Adventure Seeking Seniors also thanked the Harden Foundation for allowing the organization to use its Salinas facility for the luncheon. Volunteers and youth were given a tour of the Harden Foundation property during the event.
Salcido said the organization believes every generation has something valuable to contribute and that opportunities for seniors to mentor youth can help pass along important life lessons while encouraging young people to become compassionate and responsible leaders.
“The event also served as a reminder that volunteering is not simply about giving time — it is about making a difference in the lives of others,” she added. “From setting a table and serving a meal to sharing a life lesson, every act of service matters.”
As Adventure Seeking Seniors continues its work with local seniors, the organization hopes its partnership with the Gonzales Youth Guardians will grow and create more opportunities for young people and seniors to learn from one another.
The luncheon celebrated the volunteers who help make Adventure Seeking Seniors’ programs possible while encouraging the next generation to embrace service, responsibility and leadership.
“Together, Adventure Seeking Seniors, the Gonzales Youth Guardians and community partners like the Harden Foundation are showing that when generations come together, everyone has something to learn — and something valuable to give,” Salcido said.
